What is a VIN?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-character identification number of a car. It encodes the manufacturer, model, model year and plant. The letters I, O and Q are never used so they are not confused with 1 and 0. A VIN identifies the car unambiguously in auction and registry databases.
Where do I find the VIN?
On the plate at the base of the windshield on the driver side (visible from outside), on the sticker in the driver door jamb, in the registration and insurance documents. Copart and IAAI listings show the VIN in the lot description.
What does the auction history show?
Every sale of the car at Copart and IAAI that is in our database: auction date and yard, mileage, primary and secondary damage, title type, whether the car starts and drives, auction photos and the sale price. If the car was listed several times, you see the whole chain of sales.
What does “last bid” mean?
If the car did not sell or the auction did not publish the final price, we show the last bid we saw during bidding. The final price may have been noticeably higher: not every bid is visible during the auction. The sale price is shown separately.
How do I remove or hide a car history?
The owner of the car can ask us to hide the whole page, a single sale or specific photos. How to send a request is described on the “Data removal” page (linked in the site footer). After the check the page stops opening and disappears from the sitemap, and search engines are notified about the removal.
Where does CarBids get its data?
From public Copart and IAAI auction data through licensed data providers. New and updated lots are loaded throughout the day. We keep the photos and results after they disappear from the auction page. CarBids is not affiliated with Copart or IAAI.
Why is there no data for my VIN?
The car may never have been sold at Copart or IAAI, or its sale is not in our database yet. Check the VIN for typos (17 characters, no I, O or Q) and try again later.
